HISTORY AND ORIGIN

Born in Kyoto, genmaicha is surrounded by a legend: a farmer supposedly had the idea of producing this tea, cut with rice, to allow the poor to buy tea and benefit from its benefits. Over time, its unique flavor has finally won over the masses!

The sencha green tea used in our genmaicha is harvested by our farmers in Fujieda in early spring. Once harvested and dried, the green tea is blended on-site with brown rice from a nearby plantation.

Our genmaicha is grown 100% naturally, without chemicals or additives. All our tea plants thrive in harmony with nature, surrounded by an incredible array of insects that we leave undisturbed.

The sencha green tea used in this Genmaicha (玄米茶, “brown rice tea”) is harvested in the spring in Fujieda (Shizuoka region, the birthplace of green tea in Japan) by our partner farmers, also producers of our Classic matcha. After harvesting, the tea leaves are steamed for a few seconds to lock in its properties before being rolled in the Japanese tradition, to bring out all the flavors of the plant. Finally, the tea is blended on site with puffed brown rice from a neighboring plantation.

WHERE DOES GENMAICHA COME FROM?

Genmaicha is also known as "popcorn tea" due to the few grains of rice that popped during roasting, reminiscent of the more familiar popcorn.

Genmaicha originated in Kyoto from humble beginnings. Legend has it that the first person to experiment with this blend was a farmer, whose idea was to allow the poor to finally buy tea, an expensive commodity, and benefit from its vitamins and minerals. Indeed, this 50% green tea and 50% rice blend cost less than pure green tea. Moreover, malnourished people consumed it because the nutrients in green tea and puffed rice gave them almost the same feeling of satiety as certain foods. For this same reason, Genmaicha was also favored by monks during periods of fasting, soldiers and samurai on very reduced food rations, and people convalescing who were waiting to be able to resume a normal diet.

Over time, its uniquely sweet flavor has won over all Japanese social classes, and genmaicha has become popular both in Japan and abroad. Today, a wide variety of genmaicha teas are available to appeal to a wide variety of tastes. Some producers strive to achieve excellence by selecting the finest green tea and brown rice.

HOW TO STORE GENMAICHA?

Store in a cool, dry place. Its taste and benefits will be optimal for 6 months after opening.
